What is a Normal Temperature?
Human body temperature can vary from person to person. While 98.6°F (37°C) is commonly considered the standard, normal body temperature can range between 97°F (36.1°C) and 99°F (37.2°C), according to the Mayo Clinic.
What is Considered a Low-Grade Fever?
The CDC defines a fever as a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, or when someone feels warm to the touch or reports feeling feverish.
What is Considered a Fever?
A fever is typically defined as the following internal temperature readings:
-
Adults: 103°F (39.4°C) or higher.
-
Children:
-
Under 3 months: 100.4°F (38°C) or higher.
-
3 to 6 months: 102°F (38.9°C) or higher.
-
6 months to 24 months: 102°F (38.9°C) or higher.
-
Over 24 months: 102°F (38.9°C) or higher.
-
When using a forehead thermometer, readings are typically lower by 0.5°F to 1°F since they measure external skin temperature. Forehead temperature also tends to decrease with age, with older individuals having slightly lower readings.
MOBI thermometers can also measure internal temperature via the ear, which is more accurate. The closer to the source of the temperature, the more precise the reading. Our MOBI Oral Thermometer is the most accurate, as it reads closest to the body’s internal temperature.
Important Note
MOBI thermometers are not a substitute for medical professionals. If you’re concerned about an individual’s health or the temperature indicates a potential medical issue, please seek professional medical help.
Troubleshooting Temperature Readings
If your thermometer shows inaccurate results, it may be due to one of two common issues:
-
Thermometer is reading air temperature: If the thermometer is triggered before being placed properly, it will read the surrounding air instead of body temperature. Ensure that you follow these steps for accurate readings:
-
Forehead Scanning: Clean the sensor, ensure the probe cover is on, place the thermometer on the forehead, and then press the scan button.
-
Ear Scanning: Clean the sensor, remove the probe cover, gently insert the thermometer in the ear, and press the scan button.
-
Object Scanning: Clean the sensor, place the probe cover on, hold the thermometer 1-2 inches away from the object, and press the scan button.
Refer to your device manual for specific instructions: User Manuals.
-
-
Temperature extremes affecting the unit: If the thermometer has been exposed to extreme heat or cold, it may affect the reading:
-
If too cold: Remove the batteries, place the thermometer in a warm area for 1 hour to reset.
-
If too hot: Remove the batteries, place the thermometer in a cool area for 30 minutes to 1 hour to reset.
After either situation, be sure to clean the sensor thoroughly with an alcohol swab to avoid false readings.
-
By understanding normal body temperature ranges and following proper usage instructions, you can ensure more accurate readings from your MOBI thermometer. Always clean the sensor and avoid extreme temperature conditions to maintain the thermometer’s reliability.
