This is a common question with two possibilites:
1. If the thermometer is triggered to read a temperature before it is in place, it will read the air directly infront of the sensor. Please ensure that for each reading type, the thermometer is used appropriately:
HEAD SCANNING
- Check the sensor for cleanliness. If it is dirty, please wipe gently with rubbing alcohol and left to dry.
- Make sure the probe cover is on the device.
- Place the thermometer either lightly against the forehead between the eyebrows or up to 2 inches away.
- After placement, use the device's designated HEAD/SCAN/TRIGGER button to take the reading.
EAR SCANNING
- Check the sensor for cleanliness. If it is dirty, please wipe gently with rubbing alcohol and left to dry.
- Remove the probe cover from the device.
- Place in the ear gently and comfortably.
- After placement, use the device's designated EAR/SCAN button to take the reading.
FOOD / OBJECT SCANNING
- Check the sensor for cleanliness. If it is dirty, please wipe gently with rubbing alcohol and left to dry.
- Make sure the probe cover is on the device.
- Hold the device 1-2 inches away from the target. Please do not place the device in the path of steam or in any liquids.
- After placement, use the device's designated FOOD/OBJECT button combinations to take the reading.

2. The thermometer might have been exposed to an extreme drop in temperature and the unit itself is “cold”. Remove the batteries from your thermometer and place your thermometer in direct sunlight or a warmer location for at least 1 hour – to warm the unit up. This should reset the thermometer.
Before attempting to use your thermometer again, make sure the sensor has been thoroughly cleaned. Gently clean BOTH the forehead and ear probe individually with an alcohol swab – making sure that there is absolutely no buildup of dirt on either probe or probe cap. Any buildup of dirt will give a false reading. Your thermometer should be able to be used as intended.
